Mock Draft Analysis

Expert Mock Draft - HoopsKLYCE Analysis
July, 2009

In late July, 2009, I participated in a mock Draft organized by Rotoworld.com.  The purpose of the draft was to give Rotoworld an idea of early values for players.  I also participated in this draft last year and when the league was played out I won by a wide margin. (see article on the main page).

I made a summary of the draft (first five rounds) in the table below.  I like to use this type of mock draft to check "industry" perceptions of certain players.  Although it is very early in terms of preparing for fantasy basketball, I have already spent a considerable amount of time on the projections - I am sure more than other participants in this draft.

The scoring system for the league was P, A, R, S, B, 3, FT%, FG%, -TO.  We were to draft as if we would start two centers.

In the table the players are listed in the order in which they were selected.  In the column next to their draft position was my projected rank at the time.  The last column titled "Difference" shows the discrepancy of their actual draft position to my rank.  A positive number indicates the player was taken higher than I would recommend.  A negative number indicates the player slipped.  Bigger negative numbers would suggest a "steal".

I consider using this information to adjust player values.  Sometimes because I think I may have been wrong but usually since I do not want a player to be taken earlier than he really needs to be.  This adjustments are usually minor since I have confidence in my rankings.

The first five rounds of the draft are shown below:
